Lisa Kalynchuk, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Dalhousie University, is examining a phenomenon called long-term kindling in rats. Long-term kindling, a process whereby daily electrical stimulation gives rise to convulsive motor seizures, may cause changes in emotional behavior, such as anxiety and depression. These behaviors may model observations in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy. Dr. Kalynchuk will examine how long-term kindling may result in behavioral measures of depression, and investigate the molecular changes in the brain that underlie epilepsy-induced anxiety and depression. This work may lead to the development of new therapies for the treatment of depression and anxiety in patients with epilepsy. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
