Kent A. Kiehl, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Institute of Living/Hartford Hospital, is exploring the effects of cognitive remediation on patients with schizophrenia utilizing noninvasive brain imaging procedures to examine how and where brain changes occur. Cognitive remediation involves intense training using mental exercises designed to help patients improve function on such tasks as attention and working memory. During the course of the treatment, their brains change. The study may lead to improved treatment programs for schizophrenia and related mental illnesses.
