Donald Klein, M.D. (Distinguished Investigator 2000) of Columbia University, is testing the suffocation false alarm theory of panic disorder, which posits that panic disorder patients are sensitive to inhaling carbon dioxide. The sleep apneic threshold will be tested in sleeping subjects with panic disorder. It is hypothesized that panic patients, who are most sensitive to their own internal carbon dioxide, will have the shortest period of apnea and will resume breathing at relatively low levels of blood carbon dioxide.
