Isabel T. Lagomasino, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Southern California, observes that while depressive disorders are common among low-income Latinos, this population tends to lag behind whites in rates of receiving appropriate depression care and in remission from depression. These disparities may result from patients' attitudes regarding depression and knowledge of the treatments that are available. Dr. Lagomasino seeks to examine the factors that impede Latinos from entering and remaining in depression care, and to examine long-term outcomes. A patient-level intervention will be developed, adapting the Stanford Chronic Disease Self-Management Program (Spanish version) - a patient education and empowerment intervention proven to improve health behaviors, health status and health care utilization for other chronic medical conditions. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
