Jaakko Lappalainen, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Yale University School of Medicine, will search for genetic variation within two genes (GAD65 and GAD67) related to the neurotransmitter GABA, and test whether these variants contribute to alterations in GABA levels and predisposition to psychiatric disorders. Previous studies suggest a decrease in GABA levels in depression. Virtually all brain GABA is produced by glutamate decarboxylase (GAD). Results from this study could increase the understanding of the role of GAD in brain GABA function. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
