Colleen K. Loo, M.D. (Independent Investigator 2007) of the University of New South Wales, is studying memory impairment associated with electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for depression. She will conduct a clinical trial to determine if such impairment may be prevented by the administration of ketamine at the time of ECT treatment. Patients undergoing a course of ECT will be offered the opportunity to receive a small dose of ketamine (or placebo) as part of their anesthetic. Mood changes and any memory changes will be evaluated over the course of treatment to see if the subjects who received ketamine had less memory side effects than those who did not, while still improving in their depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Unipolar/Bipolar |
