Francis McMahon, M.D., (Independent Investigator 2006) of the National Institute of Mental Health, of is examining the influence of genes on response to antidepressant treatment. While many patients improve with medication, only a minority remit fully, while others develop side effects and some people respond to one medication but not another. Dr. McMahon will use a large DNA sample from people with depression treated with citalopram over a 4 to 10 week period. A genetic marker (HRTR2A) has been identified that is associated with treatment outcome. He has also found 2 genetic markers strongly associated with treatment-emergent suicidal ideation. He proposes to now study more extensively these genetic influences of antidepressant treatment outcome and side effects and hopes the results will enable the development of improved diagnosis and treatment.
