Andrea Mesen-Fainardi, M.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Association Center of Genetic Studies in Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders, will seek to identify a gene or genes that are defective in individuals with schizophrenia in a sample of Costa Rican families with a high density of schizophrenia and control subjects. Using molecular genetics, brain imaging, clinical and cognitive studies, Dr. Mesen-Fainardi hopes to determine the pattern of inheritance and what aspect of schizophrenia is associated with the genetic defect(s).
