Delwyn Miller, Pharm.D., M.D. (Independent Investigator 2003) of University of Iowa, will investigate whether a combined treatment of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) combined with Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) will better manage auditory hallucinations in people with schizophrenia than merely one (rTMS or CBT), and if the effects will last a significantly longer time. Auditory hallucinations are common in people with schizophrenia (as high as 50-80%). Though medications help many people with auditory hallucinations, approximately 25% are chronic and don’t respond to the medications. Studies examining the effects of CBT and rTMS used alone are promising, but no study has looked at the effect of combining these distinct treatments. Studying patients who have adequate medications, but are still experiencing voices, Dr. Miller hopes to identify new combinations of existing treatments that may be helpful for the distressing voices associated with schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
