David D. Mott, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Emory University, is investigating the kainate receptor, a member of the glutamate receptor family. Studies suggest that this family of receptors may play a role in schizophrenia. Substances which block kainate are expected to have subtle effects on the excitability of nerve cells. Dr. Mott will characterize the zinc modulatory site on kainate receptors, and examine the role of kainate receptors in mediating excitation of nerve cells in the hippocampus and cingulate cortex. In addition, the role of zinc in blocking kainate currents in these two brain regions will be examined. This work may have relevance to identify new therapeutic targets for antipsychotic medications.
