Barnaby Nelson, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2008) of the Orygen Research Centre, University of Melbourne, seeks to assess whether self-disturbance predicts increase of psychotic symptoms and onset of psychotic disorder within the 'ultra-high' risk (UHR) population for schizophrenia and psychosis. He also aims to assess the validity of self-disturbance as a core disturbance of psychotic disorders by examining whether it is present in a population with a first episode of a psychotic disorder (FEP). Forty UHR and 20 FEP patients will be assessed for self-disturbance and other clinical characteristics using various interview instruments. The UHR participants will be reassessed at a 12-month follow-up point in order to measure various clinical characteristics, including presence of psychotic disorder. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
