Sara Niego, M.D. (Young Investigator 2006) of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Research Institute, seeks to learn why individuals with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are at greater risk for metabolic syndrome and obesity, compared to the general population. Dr. Niego will compare abdominal fat, insulin resistance, and lipid abnormalities in youths with schizophrenia and bipolar disease who have not been treated with antipsychotics to healthy controls. She is focusing on untreated youths to determine if the illnesses themselves contribute to the risk for the metabolic disorder and obesity. The study will involve 60 treatment-naïve youngsters aged 12 to 21 years. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS\Mood Disorders/Schizophrenia\Bipolar/Schizophrenia |
