Edwin Van den Oord, Ph.D. (Independent Investigator 2002) of Virginia Commonwealth University, will conduct a pilot study to compare the haplotype structure in an UK sample with the haplotype structure in an Irish sample and then will perform a small haplotype map based search to detect susceptibility genes for schizophrenia n chromosome 22q. The recent discovery of fairly simple haplotype structures in the human genome and research efforts to construct haplotype maps offer exciting new possibilities for genome wide scans to detect susceptibility genes for schizophrenia. Successful completion of this project will mean that he has learned how to use existing haplotype maps in an optimal and scientifically responsible manner, thereby paving the road for an efficient and powerful genome wide scan to detect susceptibility genes for schizophrenia, and performed a small scan to detect susceptibility genes for schizophrenia on chromosome 22q. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
