Roel A. Ophoff, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of University of California, Los Angeles, is studying the short arm of chromosome (8p21-p23 region), as many findings have suggested that schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Tourette Syndrome are associated with this area. Dr. Ophoff hypothesizes that a chromosomal rearrangement in this area, or an inversion, may have an effect on the expression of genes located within the inversion or near its breakpoints. He will try to determine the origin and nature of the inversion and examine its effects on recombination, gene mapping and gene identification, as well as examine gene expression. His work may provide important insights into the etiology of severe psychiatric disorders. Program Area: MULTIPLE FOCUS AREAS\Schizophrenia/Bipolar/Tourette's Syndrome |
