Mark G.A. Opler, Ph.D., M.P.H. (Young Investigator 2003) of Columbia University, is investigating the role of prenatal lead exposure in schizophrenia. Recent work has shown that mid-pregnancy exposure to lead is associated with an increased risk of schizophrenia. Dr. Opler aims to further explore this relationship in an additional sample subjects with schizophrenia, who have prenatal serum specimens that have been stored for many years. Although lead cannot be measure in sera, a biological marker of lead can be reliably used. This work may help to further our understanding of prenatal chemical risk factors for schizophrenia.
