William E. Ottowitz, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Massachusetts General Hospital, will use positron emission tomography (PET) to evaluate the cognitive deficits associated with major depression. The PET scan will be administered while the patients are receiving a test of verbal learning. Previous studies suggest impairments in verbal learning in patients with major depression but the neural correlates of this abnormality has not been investigated. This work may lead to defining more refined diagnostic subtypes of major depression and new treatment strategies. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar)\Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) |
