David J. Printz, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, will measure levels of transthyretin and thyroid hormones in the spinal fluid of patients with treatment-nonresponsive bipolar depression and healthy controls. Previous work indicates a reduction in transthyretin, a protein important for transporting thyroid hormones in the brain, in patients with unipolar major depression. Patients will then be treated in a blinded fashion with either high dose thyroxine or placebo in order to determine if thyroxine augmentation is effective in treating bipolar depression. Spinal fluid transthyretin and thyroid hormone levels will be examined after treatment to determine if they normalize with successful treatment. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
