Adelaide S. Robb, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Children's National Medical Center, is testing a new medication for the acute phase of anorexia nervosa, a serious psychiatric disorder. An open-label trial of thyroid hormone in 20 young women with anorexia nervosa will be used. Weight gain and mood and behavioral changes will be periodically evaluated. Since hypothyroidism appears to contribute to the maintenance of this disorder, this study may result in a new treatment for patients with anorexia nervosa.
