Robert M. Roth, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Dartmouth College, will evaluate the cortico-basal ganglia-thalamo-cortical (CBTC) circuit in patients with bipolar disorder. This circuit consists of several interconnected brain regions that may be responsible for the symptoms of the disorder. State-of-the-art brain imaging technology, including event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging, will be used to assess changes in brain activation during a cognitive task. Patients will be evaluated in both the non-manic and manic state in order to investigate whether abnormalities are specific to mania. It is expected that new information will be gained with regard to the biological basis of decreased inhibitory control in bipolar disorder. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
