Alan L. Schneider, M.D. (Independent Investigator 2001) of Granada Hills Community Hospital, notes that the negative symptoms of schizophrenia (such as restricted affect, diminished social drive, and lack of volition) generally account for the major loss of productivity in individuals, but are not as improved by atypical antipsychotics, Dr. Schneider will utilize rTMS to treat these negative and neurocognitive deficits of schizophrenia. It is thought the negative symptoms reflect dysfunction in the brain's frontal lobes, especially in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Research has been limited in this treatment area previously. Few studies have explored the use of rTMS for the treatment of schizophrenia. Subjects for the study will be stabilized on atypical antipsychotics and will receive the rTMS treatment for their negative and neurocognitive symptoms. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS |
