Nathan Andrew Shapira, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of University of Florida, is evaluating the effectiveness and safety of a medication called tramadol, compared to the atypical antipsychotic risperidone in the treatment of outpatients with Tourette's Syndrome. Tramadol binds to opiate receptors and blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin; previous work suggests that the symptoms of Tourette's are modulated by the opiate system. Patients will be randomized to either treatment, and will be studied in a double-blind design. This work may provide a possible new treatment for Tourette's syndrome.
