Linmarie Sikich, M.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, is studying subjects with a disorder called velocardiofacial syndrome (VCFS). Previous work suggests markedly increased rates of psychosis among individuals afflicted with this disorder. Dr. Sikich will determine the prevalence of VCFS accompanied by psychotic illnesses, and attempt to specify a pattern of anomalies most predictive of later psychosis. This work may lead to identification of young individuals with VCFS and at-risk of later psychosis, for longitudinal brain imaging, cognitive, and psychiatric evaluations. These studies have the potential to increase our understanding of the neurobiological factors that underlie psychosis. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
