Helen Smith, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of New York State Psychiatric Institute, proposes to conduct a feasibility study of a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial examining the efficacy of fluoxetine (Prozac) in the treatment of severe major depression in adolescents. Subjects will be assessed for depressive symptoms and adverse events after the 6-week trial. Upon completion of this project, the study will be extended to a larger sample.
