Claudio N. Soares, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Massachusetts General Hospital, will investigate the effects of estrogen on the treatment of major depression in women around the time of menopause. Fifteen patients will receive antidepressants, and 15 will receive estrogen (skin patches of 17-beta-estradiol) and antidepressants. Symptoms of depression will be evaluated every four weeks. At the completion of the study, the groups will be compared with respect to the remission of depression. This study may provide a better understanding of estrogen therapy and its role as a potential additional treatment for managing depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
