Lisa Stefanacci, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Salk Institute for Biological Studies, will attempt to clarify the role of the amygdala in emotion and memory. The amygdala is a brain structure in the middle temporal lobe, and interacts with the perirhinal cortex, another temporal lobe structure. The relation of both of these brain structures to emotional reactivity will be investigated in monkeys with lesions in these brain areas. This study may have implications for understanding schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and other neuropsychiatric disorders in which abnormalities of the amygdala have been hypothesized. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
