David Stellwagen, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Stanford University, is exploring the activity of an immune-system chemical called tumor necrosis factor (TNF) in synaptic function and depression. In previous research, he and his team demonstrated that TNF can directly regulate the strengthening of connections between nerve cells. They will now investigate whether TNF regulates connections important in depression, how TNF is released in the brain, whether antidepressants modify TNF release in the brain, and whether changes in TNF release are required for behaviors linked to depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Unipolar/Bipolar |
