Ya-Ping Tang, M.D., Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of University of Chicago, is studying the potential contribution of new neuron formation (neurogenesis) in depression. Previous work has shown that when s gene called PS1 is deleted, a significant decrease occurs in new neuron growth after environmental enrichment. Dr. Tang will produce mice that lack the PS1 gene in the hippocampus 2-3 weeks after birth. Then, the effects of loss of adult neurogenesis in these mice will be studied with regard to behavioral models of depression. Finally, the effect of pharmacological treatment on neurogenesis will be studied using these same behavioral depression models. In addition to elucidating the role of neurogenesis in depression, this work might lead to a better understanding of the therapeutic mechanisms of antidepressants for depression.
