Gerald Valentine, M.D. (Young Investigator 2001) of Connecticut Mental Health Center, is using the drug MDMA as a pharmacological stressor to the serotonin system in animal models of depression. This drug appears to be a useful tool to examine mechanisms of relapse and treatment-resistance, as it decreases serotonin levels, which could increase the likelihood of relapse. Dr. Valentine will assess the effects of MDMA on vulnerability to behavioral outcomes indicative of relapse, responsiveness to antidepressants, and will use MDMA as a molecular assay of antidepressant activity. This work may help to further our understanding of the role of serotonin in treatment-resistant major depression. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Depression (Unipolar) |
