Giovanni Vazza, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Padova, will investigate whether schizophrenic patients with an apparent maternal transmission carry human mitochondrial genome (mtDNA) mutations that could increase the risk of the disease. Dr. Vazza plans to sequence the genome in order to identify mtDNA mutations and then test the presence of these mutations in two large samples of schizophrenic patients and healthy subjects. Understanding the role of mitochondria in schizophrenia may encourage novel treatment approaches, the identification of susceptibility genes and new insight about the causes and the effects of the disorder. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
