Adele C. Viguera, M.D. (Young Investigator 2002) of Massachusetts General Hospital, will conduct the first study of the neurobehavioral outcome of children exposed to lithium. Pregnant women with bipolar disorder face a critical dilemma as to whether to continue lithium treatment while pregnant. Dr. Viguera will evaluate neonatal outcome and long term neurobehavioral effects of fetal exposure to lithium. Preliminary data suggest no significant differences in the mean or range of global IQ scores of children exposed to lithium and others not exposed. The results of this study will inform patients' decisions about treatment during pregnancy. Program Area: MOOD DISORDERS\Bipolar |
