Consuelo Walss-Bass, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, proposes to investigate the hypothesis that the valine to leucine mutation recently identified in the transmembrane domain will inhibit proper release of the neuregulin1 (NRG1) active fragments, thus interfering with proper function of the protein. Dr. Walss-Bass then plans to examine the alterations in the transcriptional and cell signaling activities. Her work is important because brain specific functions and involvement of NRG1 in NMDA activation have made this gene a candidate for schizophrenia susceptibility.
