Rikki N. Waterhouse, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2003) of Columbia University, will use PET imaging to assess the effect of gonadal hormones on stimulated dopamine release at the luteal and follicular phases of the menstrual cycle. This study will obtain measurable biochemical evidence that changes occur in the dopaminergic system as a result of menstrual cycle phase and associated fluctuations in hormone levels. Dr. Waterhouse hopes this study will lead to further investigations into the mechanisms behind the sex differences in human dopamine regulation, and how these contribute to gender based differences in major depression, schizophrenia, and other psychiatric disorders.
