Anthony R. West, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of University of Pittsburgh, will investigate the role of dopamine and nitric oxide-dependent signaling mechanisms in regulating the activity of brain cells in the nucleus accumbens of anesthetized rats. Electrophysiological recording techniques combined with measurement of chemicals in the brains of living animals will be used. This stud will focus on the interaction of these neurotransmitter systems with excitatory inputs in control animals and in a rodent model of the neuropathology of schizophrenia. This work may provide valuable new information relevant for understanding the abnormal physiologic processes that result in schizophrenia. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
