Jennifer E. Whistler, Ph.D. (Young Investigator 2000) of Ernest Gallo Clinic & Research Center, will examine the structure and function of G protein-coupled receptors. These receptors constitute a diverse and physiologically important class of receptors, as they mediate the actions of a large number of neurotransmitters implicated in schizophrenia and depression. Among the work proposed, structural aspects of these receptors will be defined. These studies have the potential to elucidate a fundamental mechanism of receptor regulation relevant to the pathophysiology of schizophrenia and depression. The studies may also identify new molecular targets for development of antipsychotic or antidepressant medications. Program Area: SCHIZOPHRENIA/PSYCHOTIC DISORDERS\Schizophrenia |
