Richard J. Yun, M.D. (Young Investigator 2007) of Yale University, will examine function of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), a brain region important in cognition, and the amygdala, a brain region important in regulating emotional responses, and their link to depression. Dr. Yun hypothesizes that depression involves underlying aberrances in brain circuits involving the DLPFC and amygdala that can be unmasked by exposure to stress, contributing to increased vulnerability to stress-induced cognitive deficits. Results of this study will aid in the understanding of the interplay between brain regions important in depression, adding to the knowledge of the neurobiological mechanisms responsible for vulnerability to stress.
