J. Raymond DePaulo, Jr., M.D. has been an active clinician, teacher, and investigator at Johns Hopkins since he joined the faculty and founded the Hopkins Mood Disorders Services in 1977. His research interests have focused on clinical assessment, diagnosis, genetic causes and treatments for bipolar disorder and depressive illnesses. His group led several early genetic studies of bipolar disorder and severe depressive disorders. He and Dr. Kay Jamison are co-Directors of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center which they established in 2008. From 2002-2016 he was Henry Phipps Professor as Director of the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and Psychiatrist in Chief at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Since 2016 Dr. DePaulo has been the Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the National Network of Depression Centers and Distinguished Service Professor at Johns Hopkins. Dr. DePaulo has authored and co-authored over 200 peer reviewed papers and 2 books depressive illnesses for patients and families. He has won a number of national awards for leadership, for teaching, and for his research, most recently the 2016 Ming Tsuang Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Psychiatric Genetics and the 2021 Joseph Zubin Award from the American Psychopathological Association.
